August 2011

The National Eisteddfod was held in Wrexham this year and proved to be a very successful event.

Llangwm Male Voice Choir competed in the 20-45 members and came second out of six choirs.

We are very proud of the adjudication we received, praising the choir for its high standard of performance – choir members can read it on the members’ log-in page ‘Hysbys’.

Our choir first competed at the National Eisteddfod in Wrexham in 1977. The test piece was ‘Conspirators’ Chorus’ by Verdi and many choirs featured in the competition. Alas, no prize came to Llangwm then!

During the second week of August (2011) we welcomed our long-standing friends from Bavaria to Llangwm. The ‘Sangerründe Mittich’ choir have been our close friends since 1988, when Llangwm Choir travelled by coach all the way to the German-Austrian border to entertain. Many of the singers today are descendents of the choir as it was in 1988.

A concert was held in Llangwm on August 10th when both choirs performed as well as the Youth Aelwyd choir. The president was Mrs Iola Jones, Derwydd, Llanfihangel whose husband Emyr was responsible for bringing the two choirs together back in the 80’s. Members of Conwy Council and the newly elected Conwy Borough councillor, Mr Pete Lewis, were among the audience and made presentations. Mr John Hardy, of Conwy, spoke highly of the benefits of such friendships and was deeply impressed by the Aelwyd’s contribution to the evening’s activities.

The close friendship between both choirs transcends language barriers and cultural backgrounds – may our friendship continue for the future generations.
